It's that time of year again when more social events creep into the calendar. Whether it’s the ‘office do’ or a New Year’s Eve celebration – invitations start to roll in. Now you may well award yourself a little "Bah! Humbug!" this season, particularly if you’re not feeling so well. On the other hand you may also feel like getting your ‘glad rags’ on and going out! So what to wear on your head? How do you wear a hat with your favourite little black dress? It all very much depends on the hat – think woolly anything and you’re most certainly off to the football and not the ball!

Cocktail hats can be real statement makers and très, très chic! If you’ve got a special outfit in your wardrobe – a sequin, satin, or virtually any black item of headwear (with some finishing detail) can create a stunning look. Hats have a sort of magic about them – on their own they can look interesting but worn with the right outfit they can transform you into something quite stunning! Hats look purposeful and effortlessly chic. This is how hat wearing should be – no camouflage wear here! – only headwear that compliments and emphasises your style.

So here at Suburban Turban we thought we’d helpfully put together a few evening ideas. We hope you like them and they inspire you to take a look into your cupboards with fresh eyes. Sparkly clips, silk scarves, costume jewellery - all can provide the finishing touches to your perfect cocktail hat. A few tips to ensure you arrive at the ‘right ball’ looking serene and effortlessly chic!

Outfit style

The style of an outfit is just as important as trying to match the colour. If your outfit for the evening is tailored, or simply a little more fitted and on the knee, i.e. silk dress or evening separates. You might want to consider a ‘sharper look’ cocktail hat, as opposed to draped scarf. On the other hand if your outfit is flowing and ballerina length, a beautifully tied silk scarf could really enhance the look. Classic turban styles in ‘evening’ fabrics such as crushed panne velvet or stretch satin, if you’ve the confidence, can look very ‘Joan Collins’ and über chic for the evening.

Evening separates/trousers can look good with turbans. Jewel like colours can really lift skin tone and make you look well, even if you’re not feeling at your best. Apologies if this is all sounding a little theatrical and you’re left thinking I’ve never worn anything in crushed velvet! Now is the time to experiment, you’ll be amazed how these dressier, classic styles blend in with evening wear.

If your outfit contains lots of sparkle - sequins, crystal, or metallic thread - then beware of adding more detail on your headwear instead opt for a plain colour that matches or compliments. This way you’ll avoid any confusion, whilst standing next to the Christmas tree!

Although a wonderful colour for evening wear it can be draining in close proximity to the face, so a little more make-up is required. Mascara and a light brush of lip gloss can be fine for the day but this look requires ‘the full Monty’ – foundation, eye colour and lips! If you’re reading this and thinking ‘Well, that just isn’t me!’ remember with hair loss your cheekbones suddenly extend right up to your temples. Eyes can be emphasised and enhanced to a fuller effect and you can subtly re-define the contours of your face with a little extra make-up. If you headwear is plain black consider adding a diamante clasp or wrapping around a contrasting silk scarf, to flatter and soften the profile.

Select either earrings or necklace, and be careful not to ‘over do’ jewellery. Too much jewellery with headwear can very quickly look hectic, and somehow the individual elements start to compete for attention. There are no hard and fast rules here, it very much depends on the individual and what you are use to wearing. Colour and size of jewellery are also important and make a huge difference. One idea is to put it all on and then go and take a look in the mirror, if you’re unsure take something away until you achieve the right balance, whilst looking in the mirror.
